History
The Lowchen is an ancient breed, most likely a member of the Bichon family, and possibly descended from Tibetan toy breeds. In the 1500s, the breed was well established in France, Germany and Spain, where it was a court favourite, used by ladies as “hot water bottles” to keep them warm on cold nights. Numerous art pieces depicting tiny dogs clipped in the characteristic “lion” trim document the breed’s favour through to the 18th century. By the 20th century, the Lowchen had fallen out of favour and the breed nearly disappeared. In 1945, Madame M. Bennert of Brussels began to revive the breed. This work continued after her death thanks to Dr. Richert of Germany. But the Lowchen’s growth was still so slow that in 1959 it was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the rarest breed in the world, with only 40 recorded dogs alive. Today, the breed is recognized worldwide.
Personality
Though small, the Lowchen is a commanding presence in the home. He is playful and responsive, an intelligent dog who is happy to please his owner. He responds well to positive training and enjoys dog sports like agility. Good with children and other pets, the Lowchen easily fits in well with most families.
