History
An ancient breed that accompanied northern people into Scandanavia, the Norwegian Buhund herded their flocks and safeguarded their homes; in fact, Bu means “homestead” in Norwegian. The dogs conformed to the sturdy Spitz shape, with the characteristic prick ears and curled tail. Although the Buhund was recognized as a distinct type even before the Viking era, the breed was not formally recognized in Norway until 1939. The Norwegian Buhund’s numbers are declining in its native land; however, the breed’s family-friendly qualities are making it more recognizable around the world.
Personality
The Norwegian Buhund is a sweet-natured canine who wants to please. Like most herding dogs, he is intelligent and friendly with children and other dogs. He is alert, but not noisy. The Buhund adapts to country or city, as long as he gets sufficient mental and physical exercise. He has the exceptional habit – some would say virtue! – of cleaning himself like a cat.
